Brown bear (Ursus arctos)

The brown bear are a forest living predator, living in the coniferous forest in the northern parts of Europe and Asia. In some parts of north America it´s called Grizzly.

In Sweden we have about 2500 brown bears. It´s also a   stable increase of the bear in Sweden.

The bear is a plantigrade, i.e. it walks on the whole foot like we human do.

Belong to: The Order predator (Carnivora) Family Bears (Ursidae)

Weight: Up to 350 kilo for the male in Sweden.
Up to 160 kilo for the  female in Sweden.

Age: Up to 35 year (in the wild) max 50 years

Mating season: may - june

Pregnancy: The pregnancy is 7-8 moth long after the mating, but the real development of the fetus is 2-3 month - so-called delayed growth of the fetus.

Cubs: The she-bear give birth to the cubs in january. The normal number of cubs is betwen 1-3, in rare cases up to five cubs. They are all born in the hibernating-den.
