Towards Storulvån

The Nature in Sylarna

chapter 2

Towards the mountain station of Storulvån (Big wolf creek)

The plant Empetrum hermaphroditum is one of the most common plants on the bare mountain. This berry, that comes later in the autumn/fall, is a black, juicy little berry with a fresh, sourish and a hint of bitter. An underestimated taste experience.

These cross signs shows there is a trail on the mountain.

An old place of cult. This is not a seite, one of the more common cult places for the Saami people. Stones placed like this are extremely rare in the Swedish mountains. What role it played in the Saami culture is still unclear.

Midsummer eve. It’s 5 to 10 at night and the sun haven’t set yet.

In this magical landscape we have defenetely not anything against spending the night.

Silene acaulis is gilding the barren ground with it’s purple flowers.

Yellow, black, red and white lichen are decorating the stones in this environment.

A sarv (a male reindeer) is glaring a little bit annoyed at the indescreet photografer (me).

The last tent place. Not the best but you take what you can get. Not even thick clumps of mountain birches can stop rutined Mountain Leaders to find spots for the tents. This camp lays a stone’s throw from Storulvåns mountain station.

The mountain station of Storulvån (Big wolf creek).
